Controversial Hair Fashion – The Bob

In American culture, the most controversial hair fashion began in the the 1920s. At the center of this historical great debate in hair fashion is the hairstyle famously known as “the bob”. This haircut was first introduced during the Great War and would go on to define and revolutionise women’s haircut forever.

The Beginnings

In 1915, there was a castle named “Castle Bob”. It was named after a celebrated famous ballroom dancer called Irene Bob. At the time, she styled her hair with a blunt cut that was level with the bottom of her ears around her head for convenience. Little did she expect that she would forever be associated with a revolution in 20th-century hair fashion with the rise of the famous hairstyle “the bob”. This was the first trigger that eventually led to the short hair trend.

The Change

“The bob” was worn either with bangs or with the hair brushed off the forehead. It was a very simple look but a very different one from the traditional long feminine looks created by Gibson and Marcel. It was commonly known that when a woman had her hair cut short, she grew bolder and began to become more rebellious in what she wear and do. The free-spirited youth at that time readily accept the new look as something fresh and bold which coincides with the major change in societal norms and values during the 1920s. On May 1, 1920, F.Scott Fitzgeralds short story “Bernice Bobs Her Hair” was published in the Saturday Evening Post. It was about the heroics of a young woman who submit to the barbers shears and transform into a smooth-talking vamp. Many young women at that time regarded her as a role model and wanted to be like her.

Fashion & media

By 1921, the fashion and media industry began to take notice of this new hairstyle. They began to embrace “the bob” with fashion designer “Coco” Chanel and actresses Clara Bow and Louise Brooks leading the way as example. Soon, young women everywhere took the plunge and began bobbing their hair.

Trends and fears

Women of all ages began to soon find themselves having to face the decision on whether to follow the trend and bob their hair or remain with long hair. Many women were afraid that the long hair would quickly become popular again after they bobbed their hair. Many professional hair publications also predicted an immediate return to long hair.

Women takeover

It is hard to imagine but at that time, cutting-of-hair was still a male-dominated occupation. Long-lines of women were standing patiently outside barbershops waiting for their turn to be bobbed. At first, professional hairdressers refused to accept “the bob”. However, after losing many clients and profits to barbers, many hairdressers were slowly being forced into accepting “the bob”. With the participation of the hairdressers, more sophisticated versions of “the bob” were introduced with waved or shingled styles.

Controversy

There are many controversies surrounding “the bob”. In New Jersey, a teacher was ordered by her Board of Education to let her hair grow. Preachers warned that “a bobbed woman is a disgraced woman.” There are even men who divorced their wives over bobbed hair. One large department store also fired all employees wearing bobbed hair.

Rise of Beauty Industry

As difficult as it is to imagine, the bobbed hair fashion started or at least boosted the start of the beauty industry. From 5,000 to 21,000 hairdressing shops in 5 years, the beauty industry boomed. Bobbing also has led to the adoption of other aids to personal adornment, resulting in flourishing beauty shops everywhere.

Biker Jewelry 101 – A Beginner’s Guide

Biker Jewelry, commonly also sometimes known as rocker jewelry, gothic jewelry, rock and roll jewelry and rock n roll jewelry, deviates hugely in comparison with classic conceptions of delicate jewelry, and carries more weight and substance than its traditional counterpart. Rock & Roll jewelry is easily identifiable owing to the bold statement it makes with its deliberately masculine look. It is commonly crafted using thick and heavy precious metals; in particular sterling silver, the craftsmans prime choice of material. It is not unheard of to find real sterling silver wallet chains weighing an entire pound made by a famous biker jewelry franchise. The magical fusion of leather (sometimes alligator or snake skins), silver and bold designs comprises the essential elements of the renegade biker image. The good thing is you do not have to be a biker or live the biker lifestyle to shack on biker jewelry. The biker is simply a mythical cultural icon which represents the ability to ride without restriction, to feel the wind blowing hard against your skin, to flaunt your own style without a damn about conformity and to live on your own time. Wearing biker jewelry is about making a resounding statement of freedom and independence.

The gothic silver jewelry of today has evolved from simple traditional wallet chains and simple skull rings into highly intricate, custom, handcrafted, stunningly beautiful pieces of wearable art made in sterling silver and other precious metals. In the world of biker jewelry, boldness, designs and motifs matter. Frequently seen designs include an entire arsenal of animal jewelry, skull jewelry, cross jewelry, fleur de lis jewelry, hearts jewelry and fire jewelry. Fans of biker jewelry heavily emphasize the importance of good silver designs rather than brands just like tattoo lovers value great ink designs. Patina on silver appears as a unique and beautiful polished black accentuating a background of glistening silver; a uniquely quirky effect no other metal can replicate.

LA and Tokyo are the biker jewelry capitals of the globe. Known as “silver freaks” in Japan, the first Japanese to admire biker jewelry were young tourists visiting Los Angeles in the 1990’s who immediately took to the magic of Gabor Nagy’s very first gothic silver designs.

Biker jewelry, or rock n roll jewelry, was the first of its kind in that it catered almost exclusively to men, using bold motifs and masculine designs to represent strength, freedom and rebellion. Once thought to be reserved for bikers, outlaw bikers and rockers, gothic silver jewelry has crept into the realm of mainstream fashion for both men and women alike. Biker jewelry designers and sterling silver aficionados deserve much credit for the recent surge in popularity of mens jewelry, rock ‘n’ roll accessories, and skull motifs in fashion.

Gone are the times when ties and watches were the only accessories a man could look forward to wearing. Today, jewelry has become an important staple to any well-dressed mans wardrobe, with sterling silver being the metal of choice. The combination of leather, sterling silver and bold emblems comprise the essential elements of the biker image, and increasingly, men and women alike are being drawn to biker-inspired fashion as a theme for casual wear. Designers are finally answering to the call of the masses by offering new lines for both genders which include biker-style leather jackets, clothing, , shirts and, of course sterling silver jewelry. Biker jewelry, despite what naysayers of the past decade have claimed, is here to stay.

In recent years, prices of biker jewelry have risen so sharply that fans are increasingly being priced out of the market. In response to this development, compelling alternatives to designer labels are being offered by non-designer label jewelers, who utilize the same sterling silver to create almost identical or similarly styled (inspired) designs as the originals.

Ethnic Indian Clothes, Kuta Pyjama, Holi Clothes

Holi is one of the most popular festivals of India and it is most noted for its exuberance, vivacity and of course its vibrant colors. Holi is truly a unique festival as there is no such similar festival thats celebrated in other parts of the world. Being such a unique festival, Holi is not only popular in India but also all over the world. Holi is all about colors and it is this vibrancy that makes Holi so very popular. The main custom of Holi involves smearing and putting color powders or colored water on friends and family. Holi is one festival that offers limitless fun and enjoyment.
Holi is a celebration of colors but it is celebrated in pure white clothes. As ironic as it may seem, this tradition of white Holi Clothes has been followed since many years. There lies a simple reason behind the tradition of white clothes for Holi. Unlike colored clothes, pure white clothes offer a better visibility of all the Holi colors that has been applied on the person wearing. The custom of white clothes on Holi is just for pure fun and is devoid of any spiritual or religious connotation. White clothes on Holi adds to the fun of Holi celebration as a person is dressed up in pristine white clothes and in a matter of minutes, theres not a single white patch to be seen on the outfit. White Kurtas for men and white Kurtis for women are popular items of clothing for Holi. Theres a huge demand for these in the market few days prior to Holi. A popular and traditional Holi outfit for men is Kurta Pyjama or Churidar Kurtas in other light shades such as cream, beige, off-white, etc. Cotton Kurtas, Cotton Kurta Pyjama, Cotton Churidar Kurta, etc are few popular Holi Clothes for men. Holi Clothes in cotton are highly preferred since it makes the person wearing it feel comfortable amidst all the chaotic celebrations. Women are spotted in Holi Clothes such as white Kurtis paired with trousers or leggings, white Salwar Kameez, white Churidar Suit or white Sarees paired with white Saree Blouse. Since Holi Clothes are essentially one-time wear, nothing fancy or exquisite is selected for the day since there wouldnt be any possibility of wearing the same outfit again. Plain and simple white cotton clothes make the perfect Holi Clothes as they are comfortable and ideal for celebrating the festival of colors.

Men’s Fashion – The Dominating Favourites

As I write this, London Fashion Week is well under way and I cannot help but wonder just what new and wondrous creations will attempt to make a bang in the world of men’s fashion. Judging by the number of previous catwalk shows I have witnessed I predict a range of drastically bold colours and prints, weird shaped pants and jumpers that might not work quite as well in everyday life.

It is strange but no matter what happens and what the leading men’s designers attempt to throw our way, whether it is garish greens, bold blues or neon fabrics; men’s fashion has and always will have those dominating favourites that will never change.

In my personal experience and following years of working in the fashion world our appreciation and adoration for simple yet beautifully cut suits, smart trousers, polo shirts and plain cotton jumpers will never die. Many may consider this as boring and try to put us down to be the least fashionable men in the world but if these styles are so fashion poor than why is it that, in such a vast number of years and despite the introduction of every new design and style you can think of, we still dress like this?

Admittedly leading fashion designers have attempted to mix things up a little with bright colours and patterns and bold uses of materials but those only ever work in the world of cat-walks, celebrities and fashion magazines. For the real men, those who are working the nine to five in their offices, those who attend family weddings, take their wives to dinner and go on holiday in the summer there is hardly a place for a yellow suit is there?

It seems boring and rather monotonous but our love of the classic styles in those everlasting greys, blacks and browns is something that will never die and in fact if you ask me it never has to. By not wearing something so bright and outrageous you shouldn’t fear that you are losing out in the fashion races, instead take a step back and remind yourself that your grandfather, father and even leading celebrities like James Bond’s Daniel Craig have worn these classic styles and classic colours that have always worked well for them so they can continue to work well for you.

In the wake of London Fashion Week I think I can confidently state that, no matter what the new fad may be, what the latest colours and styles become and what people consider to be the must have accessories; the classic men’s designer clothing will always remain the dominating favourites.

Smart suits and shirts for the office, jeans trousers and polo’s during the casual days and maybe some linen trousers on the weekend or during a holiday will always be in the wardrobes of many men for years to come. Nothing will knock those favourites of the tops spot, don’t you agree?
